E.G. Chess Mac Support 18

If your question is not answered on this page then please “Leave a Reply” at the bottom of the page and we will answer your questions immediately.

General questions:

  • How do I exit the current game or get to the load/save/options menu:
Click the menu button in the top right corner.
  • How do I exit full screen mode:
Cmd-F will toggle full screen mode.
  • How do I continue a game that was interrupted:
    1. Make sure that you are connected to the Internet
    2. Click “TWO PLAYER” or “GAME CENTER” from the main menu
    3. Click “ONLINE”
    4. Click the “My Active Games” tab, if it is not already selected
    5. A list of your unfinished games will appear in this section
    6. Click “Load” to play a game.
  • The game ended in stalemate when the current player could still move:
Either the game ended due to threefold repetition or because of the fifty-move rule.
  • The game displayed “You won!” even though the game was not finished when playing online:
The opposing player resigned from the game so you did win.
  • How do I change the time of the games online:
Under the menu item “GAME CENTER” -> “OPTIONS” or
“TWO PLAYER” -> “OPTIONS” you can change your timezone.
  • 30 days later I received an email saying that I won or lost a game:
A game will time out after 30 days of inactivity. If you made the last move then you will win the game due to forfeit. If the other player made the last move then you will lose the game.
  • How do I castle:
Select the king and a move dot will appear two squares away from the king, if a castling move is possible. Select this square and the king will castle. This follows the standard castling move notation (e.g. e1g1 or e1c1 for the white king).
  • How do I play as the black pieces:
From the main menu, go to “OPTIONS” and click “BLACK”. Start a new game against the computer and you will be playing as black.

You can undo a move by clicking the arrow button in the bottom left corner. You can undo as many moves as you want.

With E. G. Chess, can I set up a position from a diagram in a book, by placing pieces where I want them, and then move both sides’ pieces?

    • admin Post author

Yes. The best way to do this is to use the load PGN feature. Go to “Options” and click “PGN”. Hopefully your book contains proper PGN move orders. Copy or enter your moves into the PGN text box and then click load. An example PGN game looks like this (copied from Wikipedia):
      [Event "F/S Return Match"]
      [Site "Belgrade, Serbia Yugoslavia|JUG"]
      [Date "1992.11.04"]
      [Round "29"]
      [White "Fischer, Robert J."]
      [Black "Spassky, Boris V."]
      [Result "1/2-1/2"]

      1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 {This opening is called the Ruy Lopez.} 3... a6
      4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 d6 8. c3 O-O 9. h3 Nb8 10. d4 Nbd7
      11. c4 c6 12. cxb5 axb5 13. Nc3 Bb7 14. Bg5 b4 15. Nb1 h6 16. Bh4 c5 17. dxe5
      Nxe4 18. Bxe7 Qxe7 19. exd6 Qf6 20. Nbd2 Nxd6 21. Nc4 Nxc4 22. Bxc4 Nb6
      23. Ne5 Rae8 24. Bxf7+ Rxf7 25. Nxf7 Rxe1+ 26. Qxe1 Kxf7 27. Qe3 Qg5 28. Qxg5
      hxg5 29. b3 Ke6 30. a3 Kd6 31. axb4 cxb4 32. Ra5 Nd5 33. f3 Bc8 34. Kf2 Bf5
      35. Ra7 g6 36. Ra6+ Kc5 37. Ke1 Nf4 38. g3 Nxh3 39. Kd2 Kb5 40. Rd6 Kc5 41. Ra6
      Nf2 42. g4 Bd3 43. Re6 1/2-1/2

Once loaded into the game then you can navigate your way through your PGN and also enter your own moves at any point in the game.

Let me know if this helps.

You can click the “Menu” button in the top right and then click “Quit” or if the game is over then there should be a “Click to continue” button in the middle of the screen. Let me know if this helps. Thanks for your comment.

I had the same problem as Andrew but there is no Menu button not he top rich to give me option to quit. and no red dot to close on top left corner. It let me minimize and optimize. As I tried to click all sides of the chess screen and was writing this, I got a notice that chess quit unexpectedly. So, don’t know what happened.

Do you see any interface buttons while in the game? Like a 2d/3d button? The menu button should be directly above it. Are you playing on the Mac version or iOS version? When you start the game try playing in a windowed version that is smaller than your screen size. Maybe something like 640×480.

to make it easier for me to win against the computer, where do i set the difficulty level?
easy or hard?…or does it really make a difference? hope you can help.

    thanks….frank

    • admin Post author

The difficulty level can be set in the “Options” menu when you are outside of a game. If you are currently playing a game against the computer then click the “Menu” button, “Quit”, “Options” and then “Difficulty”.

    • admin Post author

The games will time out and be removed automatically after 15 days of inactivity. The other option is to click “Load” and then click the Menu button. In the Menu you can select “Offer to Draw / Resign”. Click “Resign Game” and it will be removed. Let me know if there are any problems.

I am trying to play E.G. Chess on my iMac OS X version 10.7.4. I have noticed that the slider that controls easy to difficult will slide across until about mid-way and then it jumps and jerks the rest of the way …. advice?

    • admin Post author

The slider has a variable setting on the lower end, but is fixed in increments on the higher end. So it works out to being able to play the computer at 1-50% and then 75% and 100%. Sorry for the confusion.

  • Frank

    hello Kris,
i deleted eg chess by mistake, and also deleted it from the app store purchases menu, is there anyway i can retrieve the App without repurchasing it?
